This is a good, solid offering from Gail Eastwood, complete with excellent writing and character development. I really loved the H of the story, and injured earl who needed some tender care in order to recuperate from his war injuries. Our h keeps her distance, as she has been widowed under the most difficult of circumstances. Her loving husband, as evidenced by the manner of his death, may not have been all that he appeared to be, and this has made her period of mourning that much more difficult.

The h cares for the earl and is attracted to him, but his reputation precedes him. Once he is on better footing, health-wise, the h knows to keep her distance.

Meanwhile, we are treated to an H with stellar qualities who has the sensitivity to know he must proceed cautiously with this lovely woman, whose prior heartache has ruined her for any possible future, no matter how attractive the earl may be.

The Persistent Earl Signet Regency Romance InterMix edition by Gail Eastwood Romance eBooks Reviews

Our hero has a bad rep but is really an outstanding fellow. Similar plot of money, position, scandals with a good twist!
This is really a good book. Well written, few or no typos, for the most part historically accurate. But I have one big problem - why in heaven's name did the half brother not inherit his father's title? I can come up with a couple unlikely scenarios for that to happen, but why didn't Eastwood mention them? Why would the title go to a cousin and not to the Earl's second son? I realize there are good plot reasons for the second son not to be a peer, but I would like the author to explain.

The book is good enough I could ALMOST ignore that big drawback, but not quite. The plot is nicely developed. There is even some mystery and suspense to keep the reader's attention. I might even have given it five stars, but I'm subtracting one for that big problem with the English rules of succession.
This story carries you from page to page. You do not want to stop ready as the intrigue opens and develops. Too soon the story ends and you want to know more about the couple's future as well as who mlle is and what her future will be.
I enjoy many genres of fiction. This is one of them. I found the story entertaining, grammatically correct, and informative. I liked her writing style. I gave it a rating of 4stars simply because I have to be blown away to give that rating. Having said that I will read more of Ms. Eastwood's books and based on this one enjoy them thoroughly.
The premise of this book unfortunately got bogged down by inner conversation that the H/h constantly had, started skipping through.
This was the first book I have read by this author and I will definitely read more. It is about Lord Devenham and Lady Pheobe. Lady Pheobe nursed Lord Devenham after he returned from the war. She is a young widow who's husband's death was linked with scandal. Phoebe has been in seclusion for almost three years. Lord Devenham persuades her to gradually re-enter society. This is a sweet love story with excitement and intrigue. I highly recommend it.

I don't know what it's saying about me that more and more I'm going back to the old romances of the 1990s to read. (Well, maybe I do know but don't want to think of myself as a really old fuddy-duddy.) I like these old stories written by authors who know their grammar, can spell, and know how to write a romance that doesn't require at least four 10-page sexual encounters per book to let us know the H and h are into each other.

Our heroine Phoebe is a young, childless widow whose husband died 18 months earlier in mysterious, scandalous circumstances. She had thought they were in a loving relationship until that end and now isolates herself from society and is living with her sister and brother-in-law and their children.

Enter Lord Devenham, wounded war hero and acquaintance of Phoebe's brother-in-law, who needs nursing back to health and, for some reason the author feels is logical, is going to stay in the same household to be nursed back to health by Phoebe. Yes, not too believable, but listen, it made for a nice story anyway.

Phoebe has to learn to believe in love again, the mystery involving her husband's death has to be resolved, and this is all done with absolutely no TSTL moments, no Misunderstandings or Failures to Communicate. Well written, thoughtful and enjoyable story. I pretty much figured out the mystery before the book resolution but I liked it all anyway.
