Mitzi of the Ritz Lee Rene Books Reviews

A fun, fun read! Mystery and romance with a spunky heroine, and a hero that had me guessing to the end. Strong historical detail throughout. A great escape to 1930 Hollywood.
I love watching old movies from the 30's and 40's. The story of Mitzi is so beautifully written. Mitzi of the Ritz is written with such vivid detail and description that while I was reading I felt as though I was taken back to another place and time. I loved this book!
I really needed the laugh and Mitzi provided it. I don’t normally read romance novels and was a bit leery of starting this one. Luckily, it’s not a traditional historical romance, no bodices are ripped, no hyper-sexuality. Instead, it’s a funny look at a dark era in American history, the Great Depression. I felt very much a part of the action, loved the characters, the banter, and the 30s slang.
I’m a movie buff who grew up watching classic films especially ones from the so-called Golden Years of Hollywood. I love anything about Hollywood, like reading novels with sexy, spirited ladies as protagonists. Mitzi of the Ritz, a novel by Lee Rene, is a treat for any movie lover. I felt as if pulled into a real movie with its spot-on depiction of a fabulous era. The novel is filled with fun, energy, and verge, a real five-star delight.
I’m a fan of romance, a dedicated Twihard. I love to be transported to different places and times. Mitzi of the Ritz delivered. I learned about Hollywood during the Depression, a dark time in American history. It brought a much-needed smile to my face and is worth Five Stars!
I love riding on trains. So when I read the section where Mitzi and her sister travel from NY to LA, I was in heaven. But this book has so much more than that.

I fell in love with Mitzi and her gumption. At times I even felt I was in glamorous LA, or a tenement building in NY City.

Lee Rene is a marvelous writer and talented story teller.
This is a wonderful, authentic look at old Hollywood told through the eyes of Mitzi Schector, who is thrown into situations with her sister that are both exciting, intriguing, funny and a bit scary. I was captivated from the very beginning, and that sort of excitement lasts throughout the book. The detail that Lee Rene puts in her writing is beautiful. She truly captures the feel and heart of Los Angeles in a certain era, along with the attitude and the personas of Hollywood stars and starlets from the past.

The story involves racism, sexism, anti-Semitism and touches on the exploration of sexuality, burgeoning secret romances and self exploration. There's lots of humor too, take this inner thought about a movie star of the time, Jill Carpenter, who Mitzi sees naked....

"Jill Carpenter might be a famous movie actress with diamonds and furs, but my bosoms were bigger than hers. I wasn’t bragging, simply stating facts." Oh, and it goes on . . .

Mitzi faces places where the signs say "No dogs, No Jews" and muses gently that she didn't even make top billing. She notes that famed actor at the time, Buster Sweet, can't ride the same train because he is black, and that their driver Omar, who is even lighter skinned than Buster, can't be seen in public with two white women. These social commentaries are subtle but show the rich complexities of the era and are laid out like an intricate tapestry as the story unfolds.

If you loved "La La Land" you will love this take of Los Angeles, about half a century or so earlier, and this story should definitely be put to music too. The writing is lyrical and the telling of the story is poetic. This is a truly exceptional story and you won't be disappointed.
